Practical Effect Monsters Throughout Time is a book that features a timeline of some of the greatest feats of practical effects throughout movie history; all starting from a simple idea. Originally I started with one word, illusion and I went from there.
This idea led me to design and compile a book using my skills and knowledge of the Adobe Suite. The red and blue coloration and the halftone typeface are used to create the appearance of old books that you need 3D glasses to view properly. The images are black and white to create a feeling of age while also keeping the overall look consistent, even though all films featured were not originally black and white.
The Cover
For my cover I wanted it to be simple, direct and feature some interesting creatures. I chose the two creatures because The Thing is one of the best practical creations ever made and the Hand Monster from Pan's Labyrinth is A. eye catching and B. A great mascot of modern movie effects.
Creature Intro Spreads
My creature introduction spreads were created to to be eye-catching. I would expect readers to not read this book line by line so this page and the others like it need to attract attention. I chose strong black and white images to do this. In this particular spread I used the demon from Smile 2022. These were all done in chronological order.
Godzilla
Below is 2 of the spreads I designed for Godzilla. The intention was to show how the effects for Godzilla movies evolved from then to now.
Chapters
A big part of this project was to showcase different sections with a system. This spread features my second of 3 sections. This sections features the images such as the one that I have here for Smile 2022.
Article Spread
This was one of my spreads for The Thing. The intention of these spreads was to quickly educate on the monster for each part. This article is about how the effects were done. I chose to have a quote to sum up how the creators felt about the project and an opaque layer of one of the monsters featured in the film to create visual interest.
Timeline Website
Since a book was made, it’d make sense to create a website featuring a timeline that shows where you can see the movies and purchase the book. This was done on Figma using mostly assets made for the book.
